Bait Omar Middle Eastern Restaurant, Amman

Rating 3.94 out of 5

The JLE Team, joined with a few guests had a fun night out at Bait Omar. The cuisine is Arabic middle eastern, so the welcome “amuse bouche” was a traditional Jordanian soup known as Rashoof. It is similar to mansaf, as it is made with a Jameed base served in a shot glass! If you like mansaf, you will love this soup presented in a new way. You have to give them credit for creativity!

The key attraction for the place is the summer terrace, where it is dining al fresco, and very pleasant. The interior dining rooms are nicely appointed and have good ventilation; in spite of having argileh and smoking indoors, it was not bothersome. The restaurant is very clean, but some of us felt the seats were not comfortable. The waiters use gloves during food service (they take the notion of white glove service literally). The only issue is that they keep them on throughout the whole service, which defeats the purpose of having gloves on, right? We were assured that they changed gloves between service.

The service is your standard Arab hospitality, which was smooth and efficient. Overall, the dishes could have been better-some were excellent, while others needed work on flavors and creativity.  The excessive use of dibs rumman (pomegranate molasses) on many dishes, were overwhelmingly tangy, when they shouldn’t be,  and all you could notice was the molasses and nothing else. The grilled meat dishes were tough and almost flavorless. The biggest disappointment was the dessert, where it seems the honey that goes with the qishta (cream) with honey, was very obviously missing. A shame, really because it has the potential to be a wonderful place. The manager was eager to have our feedback and assured us that he will take our comments on board. He had such a positive attitude and appreciated our feedback immensely.

By and large, it was good value for money and we would try it again after they address the issue with the not-so-tasty dishes!
